If you hear a voice within you say "you cannot paint," then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. --Vincent Van Gogh

Art is not about thinking something up. It is the opposite -- getting something down. --Julia Cameron in "The Artist's Way"

I'm a watercolor painter in Portland, Oregon, where I maintain a home studio, teach classes, and participate in local and regional art groups. I only wish there were enough hours in the day (or in a lifetime) to commit ALL of my ideas to paper. All I can do is keep painting and make the most of the time I DO have.

I've discovered that there are two types of painters--those who start out with a specific idea in their head, and those who simply paint and see what develops. For me, the latter approach has produced some of my most exciting paintings.

When my students ask me "what should I paint?", I often suggest they paint things they enjoy looking at, but really, the most interesting thing to paint is what you don't know about yourself. The true meaning of the painting is beyond any story you can expect or imagine.
